Nantucket Historical Association Presents Plein-Air Art Classes

Nantucket ArtNANTUCKET, MA –The Nantucket Historical Association (NHA), in partnership with the Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN), is pleased to announce three one-day plein-air art workshops on Fridays, July 19 – August 2, 2013, at Greater Light, 8 Howard Street.

Greater Light will provide an inspiring setting for three one-day retreats, each focusing on a different medium, such as sketching, watercolor and pastels. This special partnership features an insider tour of the historic house and gardens with members of the NHA curatorial team, as well as AAN instructors MJ Levy Dickson and William Welch. Attendees will enjoy a picnic lunch, light refreshments and the company of fellow artists in this intimate class.

The class schedule is:

  • Friday, July 19, 2013: Sketching with MJ Levy Dickson
  • Friday, July 26, 2013: Watercolor with MJ Levy Dickson
  • Friday, August 2, 2013: Pastels with William Welch

“Bringing these two Nantucket nonprofits together for this one-day plein-air workshop in the gorgeous garden of Greater Light along with the talent of AAN instructors is a wonderful blend of what each association has to offer,” says Liz Hunt O’Brien, AAN Public Programs Director.

Originally a working livestock barn, Greater Light was a summer home and art studio created in the 1930s by Gertrude and Hanna Monaghan, two Quaker sisters from Philadelphia. The garden of this historic property once served as gathering spot for teas, a venue for parties and performances, and the perfect backdrop for summer visits with the family. Lovingly restored by the NHA, Greater Light reopened to the public in 2011.

“This one-of-a-kind, day-long artistic program follows in the footsteps of the Monaghan sisters, who created an art-filled summer retreat on Howard Street in the 1930s,” says Marjan Shirzad, Director of Visitor Experience at the NHA. “The Monaghan sisters drew creative inspiration from their garden and it’s easy to see why. Pairing this historic home with the expertise of AAN’s top-notch instructors will surely inspire artists of all levels to create their own masterpieces.”
